Alien passport

Do you live in Leudal, but do not have the Dutch nationality and cannot obtain a passport from your home country? Then in certain cases you can apply for a foreigner's passport. This allows you to travel to all countries except your country of origin.

How does it work?

You can apply for an alien passport if you:

  • do not have refugee status;
  • do not have a passport from your country of origin;
  • lives in the Netherlands, but you do not have Dutch nationality;
  • have a residence permit;
  • Is registered with the municipality where you are applying for the passport.

You cannot obtain a passport from your own authorities.

Children with a residence permit need their own alien passport. Written permission from parents or a guardian is required to apply for it. The same Requirements apply to children as to adults.

How long does it take

It takes 2 to 4 months for your alien passport to be ready. The procedure takes so long because the IND and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs help decide on your application. You pick up your alien passport in person. If you pick up a foreigner's passport for your child, take your child with you.

Alien passport and refugee passport

If you have a valid residence permit, but not (yet) the Dutch nationality, you can apply for a foreigner or refugee passport at the municipality. These passports allow you to travel to all countries except your country of origin. Which passport you apply for depends on your status. Do you have refugee status? Then apply for a refugee passport. Do you have no refugee status? Then you apply for a foreigner's passport.
