Working from welfare: a new step

Main rules

Receiving Social assistance benefit benefits and finding work (again) is an important step toward financial independence. You may work in addition to your benefits, but rules apply.

1. Reporting work or income

You are required to report to the municipality immediately if you:

  • Found a job (permanent, temporary, part-time or freelance)
  • make money, even if it is little
  • volunteering

You do this as soon as possible with an amendment form and supporting documents of your work and income (for example: your employment contract, volunteer agreement and pay slips).

Please note that failure to report (on time) may result in recovery or a fine.

2. What happens to your benefits?

The municipality recalculates your entitlement to benefits each month, based on your net income. Depending on how much you earn, your Social assistance benefit:

  • supplemented (if your income is less than your Social assistance benefit)
  • discontinued (for income higher than your Social assistance benefit)

What to do.

Submit your employment contract or on-call contract when you start working, even if it is temporary. You must also submit an income form plus pay stubs to the municipality on time each month.
Otherwise, your supplemental benefit may not be paid and may even eventually be stopped.

How do you report your income?

You can submit your income form and payroll information each month:

  • turn in to the municipality of Leudal;
  • email to: uitkeringsadministratiesoza@leudal.nl
    Please include your name and the month in the subject of the email;
  • send by mail to Leudalplein 1, 6093 HE Heythuysen.

Do the same when you stop working and no longer receive income.

3. Reward for work: the income exemption

In some cases, you are allowed to keep part of your income. This is called income exemption and applies to persons over 27 years of age. The release is 25% of your income, with a maximum of about €278 per month (amount year 2025), and this can apply for up to 6 months. There are also other releases for specific situations. Whether you can get this release depends on a number of Requirements. For more information please contact your client director about this.

Contact with your customer director

Always let your client director know when you:

  • starts or stops working
  • Have (varying) income
  • Have questions about your rights or duties

Documents and letters to keep

  • Employment Agreement
  • Paychecks
  • Annual statements
  • Letters, emails and other documents from/with your client director and your employer.

What should you think about when your benefits end?

Were fixed expenses such as rent or health insurance paid each month from your benefits? Or were debts or money loans paid off?

Remember that you are now paying for these yourself from your own income!

Work pays off!

Working from welfare is not always immediately financially beneficial, but it provides greater security, opportunity and independence in the long run. Have confidence in your step forward - and know that you are not alone!
