Why a nationwide fireworks ban?

In previous years, many people were injured by fireworks. Half of them did not set off any fireworks themselves. Hundreds of first responders—including police, firefighters, and ambulance personnel—were also subjected to violence. The ban is intended to help ensure a safer New Year’s Eve, with fewer accidents, less damage, and less disruption to people, animals, and the environment.

What is allowed?

One category of fireworks remains permitted: F1 fireworks. These are low-risk fireworks, such as sparklers, firecrackers, string flares, and decorative fountains. You can recognize them by the “F1” label on the packaging. These may be purchased and set off year-round by individuals 12 years of age and older. You are responsible for cleaning up any leftover fireworks yourself.

Professional fireworks shows are still permitted, but a permit must be obtained. In a few municipalities, associations and foundations can apply for an exemption to organize a fireworks show during New Year’s Eve. In Leudal, this will not be possible in 2026.

Still have fireworks at home? Turn them in for free and anonymously

During the nationwide fireworks drop-off days in September, fireworks can be turned in safely, for free, anonymously, and without a fine.
This can be done at various locations in Limburg:

• September 3 at the Venlo City Hall, Hulsterweg 19, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.;
• September 5 at Maastricht City Hall, Paul-Henri Spaaklaan 2, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.;
• September 17 at the Roermond City Hall, Slachthuisstraat 102, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Fireworks Nuisance and Damage

Are you experiencing a nuisance or damage caused by fireworks? Read below to find out what you can do:

• Firework damage to or around the house—you'll need to handle this directly with your insurance company.
• Damage in public spaces—you can report this to the municipality via the "Report Public Space Issues" page.
• Small fire in an open area—no emergency, but call the fire department. Call: 0900 - 0904
• If you're experiencing a disturbance caused by illegal fireworks—it's not an emergency, but the police should be notified. Call: 0900 - 8844
• Fire and/or life-threatening situation—call 112

Carbide Cutting

In Leudal, there is a general ban on carbide shooting. This ban does not apply outside built-up areas from 10:00 a.m. on December 31 through 5:00 p.m. on January 1.
