Children's Mayor
As children's mayor you fulfill an important role as a representative of children in the municipality of Leudal. You will attend and contribute to various events and gatherings in our municipality such as the New Year's reception and Leudal activities for children. Together with the mayor you look at which events suit you best. You will be mayor for a period of one year after your appointment. In short, a unique opportunity to be present on behalf of all children of Leudal!
Who is currently Children's Mayor?
In January 2026, Tess Michels from De Kwir Primary School in Neer was Neer as the children's mayor of Leudal. As children's mayor, she will participate in:
- the municipal New Year's reception at the town hall in Heythuysen
- the key handover at the opening of the Children's Carnival in Horn
- Remembrance Day on May 4 in Heythuysen
- the annual mayor's breakfast at the town hall in Heythuysen
- the commemoration at the Monument of Tolerance in Haelen
Who is eligible?
Would you like to accompany Mayor Désirée Schmalschläger to important events in our municipality? To be the face of all children in the municipality? And to give the occasional speech or perform an opening ceremony together?
And are you among those who:
- lives in municipality of Leudal.
- Is in grade 7 or 8 of elementary school.
- like being in the spotlight or you want to learn that (because it's okay to be a little shy).
- likes to go to different meetings and activities also on weekends. This will be about 5 in a year and more by mutual agreement.
And also important: discuss this with your parents as well, because they must agree to your application as well as be willing to drive you to and from activities.
Do you also see yourself as a children's mayor?
Children who would like to become children's mayor in 2027 can apply between September and October 2026. Grades 7 and 8 of all primary schools in Leudal will receive a letter about this in good time.
How to proceed?
All applications will be reviewed by the selection committee. This committee consists of the mayor, a civil servant who deals with youth and young people, and a representative of theyouth council. The selection committee will decide who will become the child mayor. We aim to appoint the child mayor in December.
