What is it?

If you are studying and have a disability, it can be difficult to work alongside your studies. With a study allowance from the municipality you get a helping hand. This prevents you from having to borrow more.

How does it work?

You qualify for the study allowance if you:

  • Are 15 years of age or older
  • is entitled to student loans or a contribution
  • Has no or little equity
  • cannot earn extra income alongside your studies due to a structural medical disability

What to do.

You apply for the study allowance at the municipality.

What do I need?

  • completed and signed application form
  • the documents requested in the application form

Additional information

The amount of the study allowance is by age group:

  • 21-year-olds and older: €376.22
  • 20-year-olds: €300.98
  • 19-year-olds: €225.74
  • 18-year-olds: €188.11
  • 17-year-olds: € 148.61

Release of internship allowance and assets

Students who receive study allowance and who receive income from an internship as part of their studies will retain partial entitlement to the study allowance. If the internship allowance is more than €225.74, the portion that exceeds €225.74 (amount as of July 1, 2025) will be deducted from the study allowance.

The student's or parents' assets do not affect the study allowance.

How long does it take?

  • You will be notified within 8 weeks whether you will receive the study allowance. The municipality may extend this period because the form is not fully completed, documents are missing or the investigation needs more time.
  • The message you receive will also tell you how much allowance you will receive and whether it will be paid to you in 1 lump sum, or monthly.

Objecting

Do you disagree with the municipality's decision? Then you can object within 6 weeks.
