Hold demonstration or protest action

I want to organize a demonstration

In the Netherlands, anyone may organize a demonstration or protest. This is a fundamental right. If you want to demonstrate in a public place, report this to the municipality at least 48 hours in advance. This way, an assessment can be made in time as to whether measures are necessary. For example, for traffic and safety.

How does it work?

It is important that the demonstration does not disrupt public order or endanger the safety of citizens. Therefore, consult in advance with the municipality, the police and possibly the fire department. They will provide, for example, crowd barriers and road closures, first aid and, if necessary, assistance from police officers.

When may the municipality prohibit a demonstration?

  • You reported your demonstration late to the municipality.
  • You did not provide the municipality with the required information in time.
  • In the interest of traffic and road safety.
  • To prevent rioting and aggression.
  • To protect health.

The content of a demonstration should never be the reason for a restriction or ban.

What to do.

You report your demonstration to the municipality. Do this at least 48 hours before you hold the gathering.
