Water Safety and Space Limburg (WRL).

Limburg better prepared and protected from flooding.

The floods in the summer of 2021 showed that Limburg must be better prepared for heavy rainfall. This is why the Water Safety and Space Limburg (WRL) program was started. In WRL, the Province of Limburg, the Limburg Water Board, all Limburg municipalities and the State are working together to better protect Limburg from flooding.

Package of measures by area

WRL is working step by step on different areas. We are starting with the areas along the Geul, the Geleenbeek and the Roer. These areas will be hardest hit in July 2021. A package of measures will be put together for each area. These include different types of measures that retain, drain and store water, and protective measures. In many places, a mix of measures is needed.

Complex task

This is a large and complex task. An estimated 15 years is needed to better protect all of Limburg. First, WRL examines the effect of each measure and how it affects the entire area, from source to mouth. This is important to ensure that solving problems in one place does not create new problems in another. It may also be necessary to take measures in areas without nuisances to better protect other areas.
At the same time, we take advantage of opportunities to take quick measures to reduce the risk of flooding.

Taking soil and water into account

WRL is also looking at how to better take soil and water into account in spatial plans. For example, keeping space free for water storage and disposal, both in rural and urban areas. This also means that it is not possible to build everywhere or to build in a different way.

What can you do yourself?

Although the government can do a lot, not all flooding can be prevented. Due to climate change, heavy rainstorms may become more frequent. That's why it's important for people to know the risks and how to protect themselves and their belongings. WRL is developing several products to help. Such as an improved warning system, tips and information to reduce flood damage, home advice and neighborhood plans.
