Hydropower
Hydropower is the name for energy derived from water, either by using a difference in elevation or by using the flow rate of water.
People also speak of "white coal." By "white" they mainly referred to the color of foaming water and the clean character of this type of energy.
Leudal is a water-rich municipality with many streams. Therefore, in Leudal there are many water mills. Water power is the oldest form of energy generation. In the past, mills were used for grinding grain but also for driving machines. By installing a turbine, electricity can also be generated. Two mills in Leudal have been converted to hydroelectric power plants: the Elisabethmolen in Haelen and the Schouwsmolen in Neeritter. These power plants do not generate much electricity; the projects are mainly for education.
