Fireworks

Many people and animals are bothered by fireworks at the turn of the year. These are mainly fireworks set off too early and illegal banging fireworks. An appeal is made to be considerate of each other.

In addition, caution is also required. Because every year many people are injured by fireworks. Rules for possession, setting off, transportation and quality of fireworks should prevent fireworks injuries.

Be considerate of each other

Not everyone likes or can stand fireworks. Setting off fireworks must be done safely. It is important that everyone follow the rules for a safe and festive turn of the year. So don't throw fireworks at others or animals and stick to setting off times.

Who controls the fireworks rules?

Police and BOAs (Special Investigating Officers) enforce fireworks regulations.

Fireworks fines

If you do not follow the rules, you can be fined a minimum of €100. You will also get a note in your criminal record. This may prevent you from obtaining a Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG). You may need a VOG for a new job, internship or assignment as a freelancer or volunteer.
The fine for setting off fireworks is €250. If you break the rules more often, the penalty will be heavier. Also the amount of fireworks and whether there is (excessive) alcohol consumption determines the penalty or fine.

Fines and penalties for illegal fireworks from abroad

If you transport prohibited fireworks from abroad to the Netherlands, you will be fined or even imprisoned. The police carry out extra checks in border areas.

Halt punishment for children up to 18 years of age

Young people under 18 who set off prohibited fireworks can receive a Halt penalty. For minor offenses they can thus avoid a fine. Young people receive a punishment from Stichting Halt to encourage them to change their behavior, for example by cleaning up the mess or apologizing. After a Halt punishment, they do not get a note in their criminal record.
