Greening Raadhuisplein Haelen
We are going to start work on Raadhuisplein in Haelen.

What are we going to do and why?
The center of Haelen is getting a boost thanks to the repurposing of the former town hall and St. Lambert's Church. Raadhuisplein is currently still very stone-based, but there is room for more greenery.
Preserve parking spaces
During the residents' evening, it became clear that there is a great need for parking spaces in the center of Haelen. That is why we have retained as many parking spaces as possible in the design.
Market
The market will remain on Raadhuisplein, as it is now. It is important to preserve the market in order to keep the center of Haelen lively in the future. We will also take the market into account during the implementation of the project.
Planting
The new planting on the square consists of trees and so-called prairie planting. The tree being planted is the tree hazel. The prairie planting is climate-resistant underplanting. It is a combination of perennials, grasses, and multi-stemmed trees that together create a colorful whole.
Residents' evening
The design was presented at the residents' evening. After thorough consultation, we jointly concluded that there is a strong desire for sufficient parking spaces. As a result, fewer parking spaces will be greened than initially planned.
The municipality will monitor parking pressure and, in the future, will work with local residents to see whether it is possible to green more parking spaces after all.
Planning
The work is currently being prepared by the contractor Van de Beeten. Implementation will take place in the first quarter of 2026.
