What is it?

Controlling pests in public areas is not an official duty of the municipality. Only when there is a threat to public health does the municipality take action. For example, if the nuisance caused by pests is so severe that an entire neighborhood or district is at risk of disease.

How does it work?

Taking measures to keep pests out

The extent to which you can control pests yourself depends on the type of pest and the degree of nuisance. Sometimes it is enough to ventilate a room, dry heat or clean up well. In other cases, larger interventions are needed, such as sealing seams and cracks, repairing windows or making vents pass through.

You can get certain pesticides in stores. However, use requires very great care, as these products can pose a risk to your immediate (home) and living environment.

If you have pest problems, contact your municipality first.

Combat by the municipality

If there is a nuisance to others or a threat to public health, the municipality will provide pest control.

  • The municipality itself takes charge of controlling the oak processionary caterpillar in public areas. On private property, however, you must take care of oak processionary caterpillar control yourself. The municipality can advise you who can carry out the control.
  • The municipality also takes care of the control of brown and black rats at citizens' premises. Upon request, the municipality advises businesses on rat and mouse control, free of charge. The municipality can provide a list of bona fide pest control companies. Control is at the expense of the business owner.
  • There are several species of bees, with a clear distinction to be made between socially living and solitary bees.
    • Social living bees live in hives that usually live in hives. These look for nectar on flowers and plants and are harmless to humans. Sometimes a colony of bees swarms in search of a new place to establish a colony. Usually they are gone after 1 day. If there is a nuisance, you can call in a beekeeper who will remove the nest. The municipality can help you with this. Very sometimes a colony nests in cavity walls or in the chimney, the municipality can help with control.
    • Solitary bees (some resemble wasps) often emerge from the grass or between tiles. These bees collect pollen from flowers and are often active for only a few weeks a year (depending on the species). Solitary bees are not aggressive and are especially useful for pollination.
  • At municipal and public buildings (such as schools), wasps are controlled free of charge. On private property, you must provide your own control.
  • The municipal pest controller can investigate fly nuisance (type of determination). From his expertise, he advises citizens and businesses on measures to be taken. For control, they must rely on professional pest controllers.
  • If cluster flies are found, they can be controlled by mutual agreement.
  • Moles are controlled only on sports fields

Cadavers

The disposal of cadavers is regulated by the destruction law and in this the municipality has 2 duties:

  • Designate a location where residents can drop off dead animals;
  • removing dead animals from public areas.
  • The municipality asks you not to drag and/or move carcasses yourself. This in connection with the transmission of animal diseases.

If you find a dead animal, please report it through the hotline.

Report directly

If you have a question about pests or are bothered by pests, you can file a report through the BuitenBeter app. You can download this app from Google Play (Android) or the App Store (IOS).

Would you prefer to report via the website? Then use the button below.

Report directly

Reports are forwarded to the municipal pest controller. He will advise you quickly and efficiently on how to deal with the problem. There is no charge for this. If the problem is of a certain size, you will be advised to have the control carried out by a company. The municipality of Leudal has a list of bona fide pest control companies. The municipality remains responsible for supervising the proper execution of the control.

Additional information

Municipal enforcement

It may be necessary for a municipality to exercise its responsibility under the Housing Act. This is the case when it appears that the nuisance of pests poses an immediate danger to the safety or public health of the immediate area. In such a case, an on-site investigation is carried out, by the municipal pest controller.

If it is determined that action must be taken, the municipality writes to the responsible persons to take action.

The municipality monitors compliance with the notice. If the notice is not complied with, the municipality applies administrative coercion.

Waivers

Only the municipality can apply to the province for an exemption under the New Nature Act to disturb or disturb protected species (e.g., martens).

For nuisance caused by rabbits, the municipality must apply to the province for an exemption to prevent damage through management and damage control in cemeteries, sports fields and industrial areas. Applying for an exemption is done in consultation with the municipal pest controller.
