Leudal is installing 113 plaques on benches
The municipality of Leudal has affixed a plaque bearing the text “113 - 1K Z1E J3” to 16 benches in public spaces.
It is a way to encourage residents who are contemplating suicide or need someone to talk to to reach out. In consultation with the village councils, a bench has been designated for this purpose in each village.
Negotiable
The campaign was prompted by the tragic death last year of 32-year-old Sayl from Grathem. His parents discussed their request to use these plaques to encourage open conversation about suicide with Mayor Désirée Schmalschläger. The plaques bear the text: “A good conversation starts with truly seeing someone.” There is also a QR code that links to the 113 website with information on suicide prevention. The installation of these plaques is part of a national campaign to raise awareness about suicide prevention.
Taboo
There is still a taboo surrounding discussions about suicide. Yet talking about it can be incredibly relieving and mark the beginning of a solution. A plaque on a bench can provide just the right impetus to start this conversation.
