Low literacy

As an adult, you are low-literate if you have difficulty with reading, writing and/or math. Often you also have difficulty with digital skills. For example, you find using a computer or a smartphone difficult. An adult who is low-literate is not illiterate. A low-literate person can read and write, just not well enough to participate fully in society.

Leudal Language Agreement
In the municipality of Leudal, one in ten people in employment has difficulty with reading, writing and/or arithmetic. Together with social partners, the municipality of Leudal is committed to reducing low literacy. To this end, the Leudal Language Agreement has been concluded. The Leudals Taalakkoord is a collaboration between several partners in Leudal. These organizations work together to break the taboo around low literacy, to make the theme of low literacy better known and to identify low-literate people after which they are motivated to improve their basic skills.
As a municipality, we would like to call on all residents, associations and entrepreneurs to join the Leudal Language Agreement. Together with all partners of the Leudals Taalakkoord we are working on a strong society, where all inhabitants of Leudal can read, write and/or calculate.
Library policy
This policy plan describes the municipality's direction on library work for the coming years. It takes into account the legal requirements set by the government. A library survey was also conducted among the inhabitants of the municipality of Leudal (332 respondents), and advice was sought from the youth council and advisory council social domain. This revealed that great social importance is attributed to the library from its educational function, but also from its social and societal function.
The library has become a core partner of the municipality. It contributes to addressing various social issues. Which increasingly transcend the boundaries of policy areas: from VVE and low basic skills, to debt relief, arts and culture and the social domain.
