Congratulations!!! You are 18 years old!

Did you know that a number of things change when you turn 18? Not only are you now allowed to drive a car without a guide, but you are now, for example, in charge of your own finances and you can vote in elections! Below you can read some of the things that change for you as an adult.

Applying for a DigiD

DigiD is an online signature that allows you to log in to government websites. You can apply for your DigiD for free via the app or via the website.

Get health insurance

Now that you are 18, you are no longer covered by your parents' health insurance. So you will have to get your own insurance. To avoid a fine, you must have health insurance no later than one month after you turn 18. You can compare insurances here.

Purchasing health insurance can be done through the health insurance company's site.

Apply for care allowance

In order to pay for your health insurance, you can apply for care allowance. This covers part of your health insurance premium. You can apply for care allowance at the Belastingdienst.

Applying for student loans

If you are taking a full-time course at mbo, hbo or university, you can apply for study financing. You can do this through the website of DUO Studiefinanciering. As a student you can travel for free with public transport. To do this, go to OV - DUO.

Are you in vmbo, havo or vwo? Then you can apply for a 'pupil allowance' from DUO.

Keep your own records

Now that you are an adult, you are responsible for your own expenses. Therefore, keep good records to avoid debt.

Donor Registry

As an 18-year-old, you automatically become listed on the donor registry as a donor. Would you rather not be? Then you can change your choice via the donor registry website.

Voting Rights

You may now vote even if there are elections, such as for the municipal election. Prior to elections, you will receive a voting card at home, which you can use to vote at the polling location.

Don't forget to cast your vote, as it allows you to help shape the future!
