Change usage surname
What is it?
You are registered with the municipality with your own surname. Are you married, divorced or in a registered partnership? Then you can choose to use your partner's name. You will then be registered by the government with this name. You can choose:
- your partner's name followed by your own name
- your own name followed by your partner's name
- just your partner's name
- only your own name
The municipality can change this for you.
Your travel document, driver's license or extract will always include your own name. In case you choose to use your partner's name, your own name will be followed by your partner's name.
Changing your name use is not the same as changing your last name. Are you having your last name officially changed? Then the last name listed on your birth certificate will change. You can find more information about this under the"Surname Change" product.

How does it work?
- The last name you choose will be recorded in the Basic Registration of PersonsBRP). This way, other government organizations are also informed and can use the surname you have chosen. You inform other institutions and companies yourself.
- Your passport, identity card or driver's license always shows your own name. Even if you are married or registered partner. However, you can have your partner's name put on these documents.
What do I need?
- If you are applying online, you will need your DigiD.
- If you make your request at the counter, you will need your valid ID.
How long does it take?
- When you apply online, the municipality will start working right away to adjust the use of your last name. You will receive a confirmation by mail from us when it has been processed.
- If you visit in person, the municipality will change the use of your last name immediately. You will be given a confirmation that it has been processed.
