A fresh and green look for Raadhuisplein in Haelen
Work on Raadhuisplein in Haelen has been completed. The new green landscaping has given the square a fresh new look and made the town center a little more future-proof. The renovated square offers more space for greenery, shade, and biodiversity.
We worked with residents to plan the layout
Before work began, the municipality organized a community meeting. During this meeting, the design for the square was presented and discussed with local residents.
These discussions revealed that residents place great value on having sufficient parking in the city center. For this reason, the decision was made to convert fewer parking spaces into green spaces than originally planned. The city will continue to monitor parking demand and will engage in further dialogue with local residents on this matter. Together, they will explore whether there are still opportunities in the future to convert additional parking spaces into green spaces and make the city center even greener.
Green and climate-resilient vegetation
New trees and prairie-style plantings have been added to the renovated square. The trees planted are hazel trees. In addition, climate-resilient prairie plantings were chosen: a combination of perennials, ornamental grasses, and multi-stemmed shrubs.
These plants will soon create a colorful and vibrant square that is better able to withstand hot and dry periods. The plants are still small at the moment, but the green spaces are expected to be fully filled with color and greenery in about three years. With this new design, Raadhuisplein is ready for the future, and the center of Haelen will become even more attractive to residents and visitors alike.
