DEELL Energy Community Launches in Ell

On May 1, a significant step was taken in Ell: three residents joined forces to establish the Duurzame Energie Ell (DEELL) energy community.

This is being done through a cooperative. The municipality supports this initiative, which focuses on generating and sharing renewable energy together.

Sharing energy together, on a non-profit basis

An energy community is a partnership between residents and local organizations. Since January 1, 2026, the new Energy Act has made it possible to share locally generated energy within the local community. At DEELL, this is done on a non-profit basis. The price of energy is based on cost, which makes it fair and transparent for all members.

In Ell, they plan to put this into practice by:

  • Sharing electricity generated by solar panels on rooftops.
  • Purchase green gas from a local livestock farmer.
  • Test run first, then deliver.

DEELL will use the next six months for a pilot phase. This will allow the cooperative to thoroughly test whether everything is working as intended. If all goes well, energy delivery to members will begin on January 1, 2027. In addition, the feasibility of establishing a small district heating network in Ell is being explored. This would enable homes to be heated without natural gas in the future.

Working Together for Affordable Energy

Alderman Graef is enthusiastic about the initiative:

With this initiative launched by residents of Ell, we are taking an important step toward greater local control over our energy. We are doing this together with our partners and our residents. In this way, we ensure that renewable energy remains affordable and that the proceeds benefit our own community.

Meeting for residents and businesses

There will be a meeting in Ell on June 9. During this event, residents and businesses will learn more about DEELL. They will also have the opportunity to sign up as members of the cooperative. Anyone interested in sustainable, local energy is welcome to attend.
