Assistance for the elderly / retirement age
What is it?
Everyone who lives in the Netherlands accrues AOW. You do this from the age of 15. Perhaps you have not lived in the Netherlands for a number of years or your AOW is lower for some other reason. Usually you supplement this from a pension scheme. Is this not the case? Then you can apply for supplementary income support for the elderly (AIO). This benefit ensures that you have an income at the social minimum every month.

How does it work?
The Requirements to apply for an AIO supplement are:
Your income is less than the minimum income.
- You live in the Netherlands.
- You are entitled to AOW.
You may have small assets, for example, jewelry, savings, car, securities and life insurance. You may also have a small pension, as long as the total falls below the social minimum.
