Basic Registration of Addresses and Buildings (BAG).

What is the Basic Registration of Addresses and Buildings (BAG)?

The Basic Registration of Addresses and Buildings (BAG) contains the details of all addresses and buildings in the municipality. Sites for caravans and moorings for houseboats are also in the BAG. Government organizations are required to use the data from the BAG.

You can look in the BAG through the Land Registry's BAG Viewer.

How does it work?

The BAG Viewer is free for anyone to use.

More information about the BAG can be found on the Land Registry website .

What to do.

If you see incorrect data in the BAG, you can ask for the data to be adjusted. You then do a so-called feedback. You will be notified automatically as soon as the municipality has processed your feedback.

Frequently asked questions BAG

1. What is the BAG?

The BAG is a computerized system in which municipalities maintain basic data on addresses and buildings in accordance with the Basic Registration of Addresses and Buildings Act.

2. What does the BAG entail?

The municipality must maintain records on the following properties:

  • Residence
  • Public space (street name or square name)
  • Number designation (similar to house number)
  • Premises (architectural unit)
  • Berth
  • Location
  • Residence object (unit of use within premises(s))

3. Why is the BAG needed?

The BAG is a basic registration that provides the following benefits:

  • the official data can only be found in one place, so that multiple administrations of the same data do not coexist;
  • By linking the registries together, the government can always have sufficiently reliable and up-to-date data quickly;
  • citizens and businesses only need to provide their data once;
  • It saves costs, by reducing management costs.

4. Where can I view the data?

All data contained in the BAG can be viewed via the BAG Viewer(external link). This is free for anyone to use. More information about the BAG can be found on the website of the Land Registry(external link).

5. Does my address have to already be in the BAG to apply for utilities?

No, the Land Registry's BAG practice manual states the following: "To apply for a connection to a utility, in practice the website mijnaansluiting.nl(external link). Mijnaansluiting.nl is the national portal for all applications for connections for electricity, gas, heat, water, sewage and media/communications. Mijnaansluiting.nl indicates that it is possible to apply for a connection without a zip code and house number."
In the frequently asked questions on mijnaansluiting.nl, under point 2 of the heading 'Submit an application' the following text appears:

I don't have a zip code and house number for my property yet. Can I already submit an application?

It is best to wait until you receive a zip code and house number from your municipality because an application with a zip code and house number can be processed more quickly. If you submit an application without having a zip code and house number, you can use the option to indicate on a Map where your property is located. If you choose this option, Mijnaansluiting.nl will search for the nearest zip code and house number combination. The network operators who will realize your connection(s) will be informed that this is an "approximate address". Have you not yet requested a zip code and house number from your municipality? If so, please do so as soon as possible. In many municipalities, the application for a zip code and house number is combined with your application for a permit.

6. Who determines my zip code?

The municipality of Leudal establishes the address and delivers it to PostNL. PostNL assigns the zip code to the address and delivers the data back to the municipality. The municipality includes the address data including the zip code in the BAG.
This working method was agreed in the Covenant on Postal Codes. More information can be found on the following website Geo Basisregistraties.
