Would you like to take care of something online with the municipality? In some cases, you’ll need to log in first. We use various authentication methods for this, such as DigiD, eHerkenning, and eIDAS.
These measures allow us to verify your identity or the organization on whose behalf you are acting. This ensures that your personal information is properly protected and that only authorized individuals have access to our online services.
The authentication method you need depends on the service you want to use and the level of trust required for that service.
What authentication methods do we use?
Depending on your situation and the online service you want to use, you can log in using the following methods.
DigiD - for residents and individuals
With DigiD, you can verify your identity. You use DigiD when you, as a resident or private citizen, conduct business with the government online.
DigiD has four levels of reliability:
| Level | Meaning |
| Basic | Log in with your username and password |
| Center | Log in with an extra layer of security, such as via text message |
| Substantial | Sign in with the DigiD app |
| High | Log in using your digital identity with a valid form of identification |
The higher the level, the greater the certainty regarding your identity.
eHerkenning - for businesses and organizations
With eHerkenning, businesses, institutions, and other organizations can securely conduct business online. You can use it to log in as an employee or representative of an organization.
eHerkenning has three levels of reliability:
| Level | Meaning |
| EH2+ | Log in with your username, password, and an additional verification via text message or token |
| EH3 | Log in with enhanced identity verification and two-factor authentication |
| EH4 | Log in with a PKI certificate. This offers the highest level of security. |
The organization on whose behalf you are handling these matters must grant you the appropriate authorization to do so.
eIDAS - for residents of other European countries
eIDAS makes it possible to log in to Dutch government organizations using a recognized national authentication method from another European country.
Do you live in Belgium or Germany, for example? If so, you may be able to use our online services with your country’s digital login method.
Under eIDAS, three assurance levels have been established:
| Level | Meaning |
| Low | A limited degree of certainty regarding your identity |
| Substantial | A high degree of certainty regarding your identity |
| High | The highest level of assurance regarding your identity |
The European level of assurance must be commensurate with the level required for the online service in question.
How do we determine which authentication method you need?
Not every online service requires the same level of security. Logging in is usually not necessary to view general information. However, it may be required to request a product or to view or update personal information.
When offering our products and online services, we therefore use DigiD, eHerkenning, and eIDAS. For each product or service, we determine which login method and which level of reliability are required.
In doing so, we consider, among other things:
- The nature of the service.
- The sensitivity of the data.
- The consequences of misuse or an incorrect application.
This is how we ensure a good balance between ease of use, privacy, and security.
