Address Research
What is it?
You make a request for address verification or deregistration if there are persons registered at your address who you believe do not live there. The municipality cannot directly deregister the named occupant from your address. Legislation does not make this possible. Deregistration is only possible if the previous occupant reports the change of address to the municipality or if an investigation shows that the person no longer lives there. The municipality checks whether residents are registered at the correct address.

How does it work?
The municipality depends on the cooperation of third parties to conduct an address search. The address search can therefore take some time.A note is made in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP) that an address search is in progress for this person. Organizations authorized to consult the BRP , such as the Tax Authorities, the Social Insurance Bank (SVB), the Institute for Employee Benefit Schemes (UWV) and health insurers, then know that this person is the subject of an address investigation.
The purpose of this address search is to ensure correct registration of the resident in question in the BRP. In this investigation, the municipality must comply with legal regulations.
We advise you to return all mail from that person, stating that the person does not live at the address (anymore).
What do I need?
- Your valid ID.
- Proof that you own or rent the property, such as a purchase or rental contract.
- Do you know the person involved? If so, please also provide that person's name, date of birth and phone number.
Additional information
Increasing the quality of address data (in the BRP) and combating address-related fraud is important. Therefore, the government has created a special approach for this purpose. Various organizations are working together to keep the quality of addresses permanently high. You can read all about it on the National Approach to Address Quality | ICTU.
